Sandra Smith has been with Hamilton Insurance Agency (HIA) since 2010 and currently serves as Corporate Compliance Manager. Her extensive healthcare background includes over 20 years of experience working at a third party administrator (TPA), various insurance carriers and broker agencies. Overall, Sandra has 18 years experience in various management roles throughout Northern Virginia.

Sandra began her insurance career at BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia (BCBSGA) providing sales support for large health accounts. As her experience grew, she managed a staff at Blue Shield of California focusing on small and individual health and welfare accounts. Sandra further accepted a supervisory position at NCAS, one of the oldest TPA’s in the Fairfax, Virginia area. There, she managed the employee benefits customer service call center and claims processors.

At HIA, Sandra was promoted to Sales Support Manager of the Health & Welfare Benefits Department. Her primary responsibility was management of over 70 small and large employee health and welfare benefit plans. She managed the sales support team including the Enrollment Specialists and the overall day-to-day productivity and customer service support.

In her current role as Corporate Compliance Manager, Sandra provides unlimited industry related resources specifically from the Department of Labor (DOL), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department. Sandra demonstrates expertise in long-term care compliance as it relates to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Her main role is to serve as the company’s liaison for employees, clients and brokers by providing solutions to their concerns and/or provide clarification as it relates to the compliance of employee benefit plans with applicable federal and state laws. Sandra researches pertinent articles and provides important information used in corporate communication materials (newsletters, etc.). She also provides corporate updates to the Group Health & Welfare sales team on a wide variety of articles that can serve for further discussion with one’s tax and/or legal advisor. Sandra works closely with internal and external resources to provide educational webinars on related industry topics. She maintains current knowledge of state and federal laws and determines when assistance of outside compliance resources is required. Sandra holds an active Life and Health License in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia and is a graduate of Faulkner State Community College (Bay Minette, Alabama) with a B.A. in Business.
